The Magic Flute

Ingmar Bergman   Sweden   1975   135 mins   comedy  fantasy  music  romance

This is, first and foremost, a film, albeit a film based on an opera.

If you like opera – you should see it. If you don’t like opera, there’s enough film and plot to make it interesting (Bergman is a master of cinema after all) and who knows – you may enjoy at least some of the music as well. We’ve tried it out on non-opera goers and got favourable reactions.

“One of the best and most enjoyable operatic films ever made. Watching Bergman’s presentation of “The Magic Flute” does not require an extensive opera-going experience and can be enjoyed on many different levels.”

Nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe and Cesar awards. Won a BAFTA.
